Before you start

Spectrum internet is delivered over coaxial cable, so you need a modem for the coax line and a router for Wi-Fi. Spectrum supplies equipment with self-install kits, and many customers also use their own. Details such as light colors and activation steps can vary by model, so treat Spectrum’s instructions for your kit as the final word. Gather the modem, router, power adapters, a coax cable and an Ethernet cable.

If your equipment is a single box, see gateway vs router first.

Step 1: connect the modem to coax and power

  1. Place the equipment near an active coaxial wall outlet.
  2. Screw the coax cable finger-tight into the wall outlet and the modem. If the outlet is shared with a TV receiver, a splitter may be needed.
  3. Plug the modem’s power adapter into the modem and an electrical outlet.

Step 2: wait for the modem to come online

Give it several minutes. The online or status light usually blinks while the modem connects and then turns solid. A firmware update can make this take longer. Don’t rely on the router until the modem looks stable.

Step 3: connect the modem to the router

Use an Ethernet cable from the modem’s Ethernet port to the router’s internet (WAN) port. The cable goes to the router’s WAN port, not one of its numbered LAN ports.

Step 4: power the router and set up Wi-Fi

  1. Plug in the router and wait for its lights to settle.
  2. Connect a phone or computer to the router’s Wi-Fi, using the name and password on its label.
  3. Follow the router’s setup page or app to rename the network and set a new password.

Using your own router

Your own router generally connects the same way. Make sure it works with a standard Ethernet connection from the modem, and check Spectrum’s guidance for any compatibility requirements.

If the modem won’t connect to the router

  • Confirm the cable is in the router’s WAN port, and try another Ethernet cable.
  • Restart in order: unplug both, power the modem, wait until it settles, then power the router.
  • Check that the modem is online. If it never gets online, the problem is between the modem and Spectrum, not the router. Re-seat the coax and check for splitters.
  • Contact Spectrum if the modem needs activation.

FAQ

How long does it take for Spectrum to activate a modem? It often takes a few minutes, but it can be longer. Spectrum’s instructions give the current guidance.

Can I hook up my own router to a Spectrum modem? Generally yes.

Why is my Spectrum modem not connecting to my router? Common reasons are a cable in the wrong port, a bad cable, or a modem that is not yet online. If your modem and router are one device, no Ethernet link between them is needed; see using a router with a combo unit.
