Quick answer
A blinking internet light usually means one of three things: the router is starting up or trying to connect, data is passing normally, or the router is having trouble reaching your provider. Fast flickering on a light that is otherwise lit is often just traffic. Slow blinking that continues, or blinking in amber or red, is more likely a connection problem. Behavior varies by model.
When a blinking internet light is normal
- During startup. Right after power-on, lights blink while the device boots and connects. This can take a few minutes.
- With activity. On many routers the internet light flickers as data moves. If your internet works, this is generally fine.
- After a firmware update. Some routers blink while updating or rebooting. Avoid unplugging during an update.
So, should the internet light be blinking? On many models a quick flicker is expected, and a solid light is also fine.
When it points to a problem
Common patterns (check your manual for your model):
| Pattern | What it often suggests |
|---|---|
| Slow blink, green or white | Booting, updating, or trying to sync with the modem |
| Fast flicker, green or white | Normal data transfer |
| Blinking orange or yellow | Starting up, or trouble forming a wired link to the modem |
| Blinking red or orange | Cannot reach the internet: outage, loose cable, or modem problem |
How long should you wait
Give a device roughly five minutes after power-on to finish starting. If a slow blink continues much longer than that, usually with no internet, it is reasonable to start troubleshooting. Some providers publish their own expected timings for modem lights to settle, so check theirs if you have one.
Steps to try
- Check for an outage. Use your provider’s app or website, on mobile data if your Wi-Fi is down.
- Check the cables. Reseat the Ethernet cable between the modem and the router’s Internet port, and make sure the coax, fiber, or phone line into the modem is snug and undamaged.
- Power cycle in order. Unplug the modem and router, wait about a minute, plug the modem in first, wait a few minutes for its lights to settle, then plug in the router.
- Test another way. If possible, connect a computer directly to the modem to see whether the modem or router is at fault.
Blinking but no internet
If the light blinks but pages will not load, the router probably is not getting a working connection from the modem or provider. Repeat the cable check and power cycle, then look at the modem’s own lights. If the modem shows a problem, such as a light that never goes solid, the issue is likely on the line or with the modem. For DSL users, see no DSL light on your router.
When to call your provider
Contact them if an outage is reported, the modem lights never settle, or the problem returns after a restart. Tell them the light name, color, and pattern. For a general decoder, see what the lights on your router mean, and to compare with normal behavior, see which lights should be blinking.
