Short answer

ONT stands for optical network terminal. It is the device that connects to your fiber-optic cable and converts the light signal into Ethernet data. It does for fiber roughly what a modem does for cable or DSL. An ONT is not usually a Wi-Fi router, although some providers use units that combine both.

What an ONT does

Fiber carries data as light. Your devices and router do not use light, so the ONT translates it into Ethernet that a router can use. Some people call it a fiber modem, which is an informal label.

ONT vs modem vs router

  • ONT: fiber to Ethernet.
  • Modem: cable or DSL signal to Ethernet.
  • Router: shares the Ethernet connection with your devices and provides Wi-Fi.

For the full distinction, see gateway vs router.

Typical fiber setup

  1. A fiber cable enters your home and connects to the ONT, often a small box mounted on a wall indoors or outdoors.
  2. An Ethernet cable runs from the ONT to the internet (WAN) port of your router.
  3. The router provides Wi-Fi and wired connections to devices.

This is why you can often use a router without a separate modem on fiber; see can you have a router without a modem. The connection steps match connecting a wireless router without a modem.

Standalone or built in

Some providers install a separate ONT and let you choose the router. Others supply a combined unit that includes ONT and router functions. If you see a fiber port and Wi-Fi on the same device, it is likely a combined unit. Ask your provider whether you can use your own router, and what settings it needs.

Distance between ONT and router

The limit is mainly the Ethernet cable length. Standard Ethernet cables are generally rated for runs of up to around 100 meters (about 328 feet), though shorter is simpler. Wi-Fi coverage from the router, not the ONT, affects how far devices reach.

Troubleshooting basics

  • Check that the Ethernet cable is in the ONT’s Ethernet port and the router’s WAN port.
  • Look at the ONT’s lights. Their meanings differ by model, so check your provider’s guide.
  • Restart the ONT and router, ONT first.
  • Do not bend or pull the fiber cable; call your provider if it looks damaged or if the ONT shows a fault.

FAQ

What is a fiber optic modem? A common nickname for an ONT.

What is the definition of a modem? A device that converts the signal on your provider’s line into data your network can use.

Does the ONT replace my router? Not usually. You still need a router for Wi-Fi unless your unit has one built in.
