Before you start
Yes, you can change the SSID (the Wi-Fi network name) on a Spectrum setup. With Spectrum-supplied equipment, this is typically done through your Spectrum account rather than a local router page. You will need your Spectrum account login. Menu names change over time, so the labels below may differ slightly from what you see.
Changing the name disconnects every device on the network, so pick a moment when that is convenient, and have the Wi-Fi password ready for rejoining.
Change the name in the My Spectrum app
- Open the My Spectrum app on your phone and sign in.
- Tap the Services tab.
- Select your Wi-Fi network or the internet service section.
- Choose the option to edit or manage your network information.
- Enter your new network name. SSIDs are limited to 32 characters.
- Save your changes.
Change the name on spectrum.net
- Go to spectrum.net and sign in.
- Open Services, then Internet.
- Find your network information and select Edit or Manage Network.
- Enter the new name and save.
The same screen is usually where you can see or change the Wi-Fi password as well.
Reconnect your devices
After saving, phones, laptops, smart TVs, and other devices lose their connection because the network name they remember no longer exists. Join each device to the new name with the Wi-Fi password. Smart home gadgets and printers can be the most tedious, so give yourself some time. If a device keeps trying the old name, tell it to forget the old network first.
Choosing a good network name
- Avoid your full name, address, or apartment number, since the name is visible to neighbors.
- Keep it short and easy to type.
- Do not include the router brand or model if you would rather not advertise it.
- If you have separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz names, keep track of which is which, or use one name for both if your equipment supports it.
How to find your current SSID
Your Wi-Fi name appears in your phone or computer’s Wi-Fi list, in the My Spectrum app or account, and on the sticker on Spectrum equipment (which shows the default name). If someone changed the name since, only the app, account, or router settings will show the current one.
Accessing Spectrum router settings
For most Spectrum-supplied routers, the app or account is the main place to manage Wi-Fi name and password. Some equipment may also have a local admin page, and the address and login are typically printed on the device or in its documentation, but this varies. If you use your own router with Spectrum internet, the steps depend on that router. See where to find your router password and login for the general way to locate an address and credentials.
Kicking an unknown device off your Wi-Fi
The reliable fix is to change the Wi-Fi password, not just the name. For a brand-specific walkthrough of removing devices, see how to remove devices from a Linksys router. Once you do, every device (including any unwanted one) is disconnected and only devices you re-enter the new password on can rejoin. Use a long, unique password. Some Spectrum tools also let you see connected devices or pause access, depending on your equipment and app version.
If the change does not save
- Check that the new name is under 32 characters and does not use unusual symbols.
- Wait a few minutes, since equipment can take time to apply changes.
- Restart the router or modem and check the app again.
- Make sure you are signed in with the main account holder’s login.
- If it still fails, contact Spectrum support.
