What password recovery needs to work

On many Netgear routers, recovering an admin password means entering the router’s serial number and then answering security questions you saved during setup. That only works if recovery is enabled, the questions were actually set, and the login page loads properly. If any of those is missing, recovery can fail or loop back to the start. Features differ between models and firmware versions.

Quick fixes before resetting

  • Use the right address. Try routerlogin.net, routerlogin.com, or 192.168.1.1. Orbi systems may use orbilogin.com (see common Orbi router problems).
  • Connect locally. Use an Ethernet cable if possible, and make sure you are on the router’s own network, not an extender or guest network.
  • Clear the cache or try another browser. NETGEAR’s own login help page notes that a browser may have cached the page by accident.
  • Turn off VPNs and extensions. They can block local addresses.
  • Try the defaults. If you never changed the login, it is often admin with password, but check the label on your router.

Why a password reset may not work

Common reasons include:

  • Security questions were never set, so there is nothing to answer.
  • The serial number was typed with a typo, or you used the wrong device’s number.
  • A browser, VPN, or caching problem is interfering with the page.
  • Older firmware on some models has been reported to leave the Continue button unresponsive.
  • The reset button was not held long enough, or the router was not powered on when you pressed it.

Reset the router to factory settings

If recovery will not work, a factory reset replaces your login with the defaults. For model-specific steps on a Nighthawk, see how to factory reset a Netgear Nighthawk router.

  1. Keep the router plugged in and powered on.
  2. Press and hold the recessed Reset button with a paperclip for the time your model’s manual gives (commonly around 7 seconds on Netgear, sometimes longer).
  3. Release when the power light blinks or changes, then wait a few minutes.
  4. Open routerlogin.net and log in with the defaults or follow the setup wizard.

A reset erases your Wi-Fi name, Wi-Fi password, and other custom settings. Have any internet provider login details ready, and expect to reconnect all devices. If the connection does not come back, see no internet after resetting your router.

If the reset button seems to do nothing

  • Confirm the router is on, and hold the button a bit longer.
  • Use a thin, firm object such as a straightened paperclip so you reach the button.
  • Some users on Netgear’s forums report success with another method: unplug the router, hold Reset, plug power back in while still holding, and keep holding for a longer period. This is not an official instruction for every model, so check your model’s guide before trying it.
  • If nothing changes, contact Netgear support with your model and serial number.

Stuck in a loop or getting a 401 error

Forum users have described repeating the reset many times and still being sent back to the same screen, or seeing a “401 unauthorized” message after resetting. Things worth trying: complete a clean factory reset, set the admin password right away in the setup wizard, use a cable rather than Wi-Fi, and try a different browser or device. Some people report it helps to run setup with the internet cable disconnected, but results vary. If the loop persists after several attempts, the router may need support from Netgear.

Forgot the 192.168.1.1 password

The address 192.168.1.1 is just the router’s local page. If you do not know the password, you are in the same situation as above: try the defaults, try recovery, then factory reset. For other ways to find the address and login details, see where to find your router password and login.

Is Netgear down?

The local login page does not rely on Netgear’s servers, so an outage rarely explains a failed reset. If you sign in through a Netgear app or online account, you can check Netgear’s support site or community for service notices.

Prevent the next lockout

  • During setup, pick real security questions and write the answers down.
  • Store the admin password in a password manager or a safe place.
  • Keep the router’s serial number noted somewhere other than the router.

See Netgear security questions not working for more on the question screen specifically.
