Orbi mesh systems are popular, but like any network gear they can run into trouble. The most commonly reported problems are internet dropouts, satellites that will not sync and Wi-Fi connection errors. This guide goes from the simplest fixes to the more involved ones.

Menu names and LED behavior vary by Orbi model and firmware, so confirm details in Netgear’s documentation for your system.

Common Orbi problems

  • Internet drops out randomly, then returns
  • A satellite loses its link to the main router
  • A satellite light stays amber or magenta
  • Some devices cannot connect, or connect but have no internet
  • Slow speeds in some rooms (see Wi-Fi repeater vs bridge for other ways to extend coverage)

Start with a power cycle

  1. Unplug your modem and the main Orbi router (and satellites if you wish).
  2. Wait about 30 seconds.
  3. Plug in the modem and wait until its lights settle.
  4. Plug in the Orbi router, then the satellites once the router is ready.

The same modem-first order applies to other mesh systems too, as described in our guide to restarting an eero.

What do the LED colors mean?

Netgear describes the light colors on its website, and they can differ by model. In general:

  • White or blue usually means things are working.
  • Amber often indicates a weak connection or a device that is starting up.
  • Magenta often means there is no connection to the router or internet.

Check Netgear’s Orbi LED guide for your exact model before drawing conclusions.

Satellite problems

  • Move it closer. A satellite that is too far from the main router may struggle to link. Try a spot midway between the router and the dead zone, but not too far away.
  • Resync. Press the Sync button on the router, then on the satellite within about two minutes. Check your manual for the exact process.
  • Look for interference. Thick walls, large appliances and metal objects can weaken the link.

Random dropouts

If your internet drops even though the Orbi seems fine:

  • Check your modem and provider. Test the internet with a computer plugged straight into the modem to see whether the problem is the Orbi or the connection.
  • Check the network setup. Orbi is generally intended to be the router. If your modem is also a router, double routing can sometimes cause trouble. Your provider can help configure the modem in bridge mode if needed. See do multiple routers affect internet speed and using a router with a modem/router combo.
  • Update firmware. Use the Orbi app or admin page to check for updates, and see how to tell if your router needs an update.
  • Try turning off extra features. Some people report improvements after disabling optional features such as Armor or parental controls. Treat these as experiments, not guaranteed fixes.
  • Check advanced Wi-Fi settings. Some forum users report stability improvements after changing settings like 20/40 MHz coexistence. Change advanced settings only if you understand them, and note the original setting.

Consider a wired backhaul

If your Orbi satellites can connect with Ethernet, a wired link between router and satellites is typically more stable than a wireless one. Use a good quality Ethernet cable and connect to the correct port.

Resetting as a last resort

If nothing else works, a factory reset may help, but it removes your settings and you will need to set up the system again. The idea is similar to what is described in our Nighthawk factory reset guide, though the exact steps differ for Orbi. If you have no internet after setting up again, read no internet after resetting your router.

How long do Orbi routers last, and can they go bad?

Any router can fail. Many last several years, but there is no guaranteed lifespan. Signs of trouble include frequent reboots, lights that never settle and problems that continue after a reset. If your system is under warranty, contact Netgear support.

FAQ

Why does my Orbi keep dropping out? Causes include modem or provider issues, satellite placement, firmware and network setup. Work through the steps above.

Is Orbi having issues? Check Netgear’s status information or your provider for outages.
