Short answer

A blue light on a router can mean different things depending on the brand. On some equipment, including setups from providers such as Spectrum and Frontier according to common guides, solid blue indicates a normal, working connection. On other models, blue is associated with startup, syncing or WPS pairing. Check your model’s documentation to be sure.

Solid blue

A steady blue light frequently signals that the device is connected and ready, and for many people that is the normal state. If your internet works, a solid blue light usually needs no action. If the light was a different color before and turned solid blue after startup, that is often the sign that it finished connecting.

Blinking blue

Blinking blue tends to mean something is in progress, such as booting, connecting or updating. That has its own page: router flashing blue.

WPS and blue

On some routers, blue relates to WPS (WiFi Protected Setup). Pressing the WPS button can cause a light to blink while it waits for a device to pair, and it may then turn solid for a short time on success or go off when the window times out. Whether your model uses blue for this depends on the manufacturer.

Blue light but no internet

If the light is blue or white and the internet is not working, the light may be telling you only that the router itself is running, not that the connection to the provider is healthy. Try these steps:

  1. Check for an outage with your provider.
  2. Reseat the cables, including the modem to router cable in the internet (WAN) port.
  3. Restart by unplugging the modem and router, waiting about 30 seconds, then powering the modem first and the router after.
  4. Test with a wired connection. If an Ethernet cable works but WiFi does not, the issue may be wireless only.
  5. Contact your provider if nothing changes.

If another color is showing, see flashing white or flashing red. For a brand-neutral overview of every light, see what the lights on your router mean.

Brand examples

Questions often arise about particular equipment, such as an Arris gateway blinking blue or a mobile network router showing blue. These vary by model and carrier, so the manufacturer or carrier page for your exact device is the best reference.

When to contact your provider

Reach out if you have no internet after a restart and cable check, if the light pattern does not match the documentation, or if there is a reported outage.

FAQ

Is a blue router light bad? Not necessarily. On many devices it indicates a healthy state.

Why is my router blue but I have no internet? The router may be running while the provider connection is down. Check for outages and restart.

Does blue always mean WPS? No. Only on some models, and usually while blinking.
