What DD-WRT is

DD-WRT is community-developed firmware that replaces the software that came with some routers. People use it for extra features, finer control, or to keep an older router useful after the maker stops updating it.

It is not for everyone. Flashing firmware carries a real risk of leaving the router unusable, and it may void a warranty. If you are comfortable with stock firmware and it works, you may not need it. Our guide on how to tell if your router needs an update explains when stock firmware is enough.

Before you begin

  1. Check compatibility. DD-WRT supports specific models and hardware versions. Look up your exact model on the DD-WRT website’s router database. Do not assume a similar model will work.
  2. Read the notes for your model. Entries often list special steps, such as flashing an intermediate file first.
  3. Do not use a router you rely on. An older spare is a better candidate. See reusing an old router.
  4. Plan for offline time. You will be without that router while you work.
  5. Save the current settings and note any internet login details your provider requires.
  6. Use a wired connection to the computer, not Wi-Fi.

Flashing at a high level

The exact steps differ by model, so follow the instructions for yours. In general:

  1. Download the file the router database recommends for your model from the official source.
  2. Reset the router to factory defaults, if the guide says so.
  3. Log in to the stock admin page and use the firmware upgrade section to select the file.
  4. Do not power off during the flash. Wait the full time the guide recommends, often several minutes.
  5. Reset to defaults again if instructed, then reach the router at its new address, often 192.168.1.1.

If something goes wrong, recovery options vary by model and sometimes need technical steps.

First-time setup

DD-WRT asks you to create an admin username and password on first login. Pick a strong one. Then:

  1. Set up the internet connection. For most home connections, leave the WAN type on automatic (DHCP) unless your provider says otherwise.
  2. Configure Wi-Fi. Set a network name and WPA2 or WPA3 security (if your hardware supports it) with a strong password.
  3. Check the time and basic settings.
  4. Save and apply changes, being careful to follow the interface’s instruction about applying versus saving.
  5. Test with a wired and a wireless device.

Using DD-WRT as a second router

If you only want to extend your network, you can flash a spare router and use it as an access point behind your main router. This usually involves turning off its DHCP server and connecting it LAN port to LAN port. See can you use any router for background on connecting one router to another.

How do I hard reset a DD-WRT router?

Methods differ by model. A common approach is a reset button hold, or a reset through the admin page’s Administration section, followed by a power cycle. Some models need a specific procedure, such as holding the button for a certain time while powering on. Use the DD-WRT wiki entry for your model, since a wrong method can cause problems.

How do I update DD-WRT firmware?

Updates are manual. Download the build recommended for your model and flash it from the firmware upgrade page, as above. Do not simply choose the newest build, since some are less stable. Check forum reports for your model.

What about OpenWrt?

OpenWrt is another community firmware, supported on many of the same routers. Some people find it more flexible, and others find it harder to start with. Check the OpenWrt hardware table for your model, and follow its install instructions. Do not flash one firmware over the other without reading the instructions for your device.

Is it a good idea for beginners?

If you want to try it, begin with a spare supported router, follow your model’s page exactly, and keep your main network on stock firmware until you are confident.

Security reminders

  • Use a strong admin password.
  • Avoid exposing the admin page to the internet.
  • Keep an eye on updates, because custom firmware is not updated automatically.
